Flash Player unable to proceed with the installation

I have difficulties installing the latest version of Adobe Flash Player (14.0.0.125) on my Mac OS X 10.9.3 (Mavericks). Every time I do so, it fails at 90% with the following error message.

Error: Unable to proceed with the installation

When I go to troubleshoot the problem, I find that I have version 13.0.0.214 of Flash Player installed on my system, and that the (alleged) latest version (for Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8) is 13.0.0.201 (see following URL).

Further research has revealed that the latest version of Flash Player (for Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 and 10.9) is 14.0.0.125 (see following URL).

This is not the first time I have experienced problems upgrading Adobe Flash Player. I experienced a similar problem before upgrading to Mac OS X 10.9 except with different version numbers of the same software. That is, the version that was installed was greater than the version that was downloaded. Note that I did not experience this problem with prior versions of the OS (i.e. Mac OS X 10.6 and 10.7).

This time I went one step further and used a different default browser to locate, download and install (what I presumed was the latest version of) Flash Player. No difference....

My question is, why does my default browser point to an older version of the installation software, and how can I resolve this? Also, correct me if I am wrong but, the reason I have a 'later' version of the software (that is, version 13.0.0.214) is due to the OS upgrade? I do not recall ever upgrading Adobe Flash Player....

Not sure whether or not this is relevant, but I also have Adobe Creative Suite 5 installed on my system (which was also successfully upgraded during all OS upgrades).

UPDATE: I have found a workaround to my problem. Rather than upgrading to the latest version of Adobe Flash Player through System Preferences, I first uninstalled the older version by following the instructions of the following link.

I then downloaded and installed the latest version of Adobe Flash Player from the following link.

http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/licensing/mac/install_flash_player_14_osx.d...

Therefore, it appears that the problem lies with the update program and not my system configuration. It would be good to find out what causes this problem so as to avoid/resolve similar issues in the future....

Thank you! I spent over an hour struggling with this bug (all so I could send my hubby a birthday e-card), trying methods from several forums (fora?). Yours was the one that finally worked on Mac 10.9.3. (I downloaded the installer w/ Firefox 30.0 rather than Safari 7.0.4, which I had used for earlier attempts. Not sure if this made a difference.)

Glad that my post was able to help you. Note that it does not make a difference which browser you use. Theoretically, Flash Player should work on any browser regardless of the one you used to download the install/update software. Correct me if I am wrong....

Hi vet668,

We are aware of the customer issues regarding installing Flash Player on OS X 10.9 using the shim installer from get.adobe.com/flashplayer and are investigating these issues. Can you please post the contents of the /Users/<YourUserID>/Library/Logs/FlashPlayerInstallManager.log file for the install attempts using the shim installer?

Regarding the Installation problems | Mac OS (installation-problems-flash-player-rvm.html) page this does indeed contain the incorrect latest version of the Flash Player, which is 14.0.0.125. Installation problems | Mac OS (installation-problems-flash-player-mac.html) page contains the correct information. I will forward the page with incorrect version number to the appropriate team to fix.

Hi Maria,

If they were not deleted as part of the fresh install, I will post them to this forum. Failing that, I will look at my backups since I do suspect that I backed up my computer before installing Adobe Flash Player. Either way, will let you know.

I was able to successfully install Flash Player on my Mac running 10.8.5 and Safari. Despite multiple attempts, following the instructions posted on the web, uninstalling an older version, etc., etc. the installer for the update download from Adobe hung up for a long time and then gave me an error message (an error has occurred - very informative!).

Is there an alternative to Flash Player so people don't have to use this junk ware?

I am having the same failure on OS 10.8.5. I tried the provided troubleshooting tips of uninstalling and restarting. I am aghast that such a fundamental piece of modern day computing software cannot install via the standard mechanism. Words fail that this continues after weeks of acknowledging the problem. Unbelievable.

THis worked for me on 10.8.5. This workaround should be on the Troubleshooting Page. I wasted an hour trying to install it "properly". I am very frustrated with Adobe.

Thank you all for providing the log files. They provided valuable information and we have been able to reproduce the issue. To bypass installing Flash Player using the installer from get.adobe.com/flashplayer, you can download the offline installer available here Flash Player Plug-in (All other browsers). This offline installer will install without returning the error.

flashplayer 14.0.0.125, for Firefox, not only wouldn't install (Adobe F-P Installer screen 'blank', just sits there... Forever) it removed every* other saved version I had saved (in binary files, in case of emergencies). Now* am stuck* with Shockwave Flash 13.0.0.214 only, according to Add-Ons &* the Windows Downloaded programs (under Add/Remove Programs).

After reading all the above, I see I'm not the only one, nor the only OS (btw, it wouldn't install in IE either, but I think that's because I'm still stuck with XP sp3, and IE8 is as far as I can go with it*)... and I don't know how to find, or supply, the 'Log Files'. I will try the supplied link though...(Thank You*).

What happened..??

Hi John253,

You're issue on Windows may be different than this issue on Mac OS X. In the future, please create a new thread. It helps to keep individual issues separate and keeps the responses to specific individuals from getting too confusing.

Flash Player still supports Win XP and IE8, so that wouldn't be the reason Flash Player for IE isn't installing.

To help troubleshoot, please provide the FlashInstall.log file located at C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash

The direct installers for Windows ActiveX and Plugin are available at:

Windows: Flash Player ActiveX (Internet Explorer)

Windows: Flash Player Plug-in (All other browsers)

I was able to download only after going to direct url and bypassing the package. I didn't have to uninstall old program. I don't have url handy - just google direct url for adobe flash player for safari 14. Hope it works for everyone!

The problem is a permission issue with the installer trying to use a directory that is only accessible by root. The folder path is visible in the log output throwing the error 30 message. To fix this problem, you have to temporarily allow the installer access to the root directory. Open terminal and type the following (if prompted for a password in terminal, use your logon password):

cd /var/folders/zz/zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n0000000000000

sudo chmod 777 T

Now run the installer. After it completes run these commands in the terminal.

sudo chmod 700 T

This will put the permissions back to where they were.

This problem will happen even if you are an logged in as an admin on the system. I hope this helps someone - took me a few to figure out what was happening. I can't wait for the day when I can completely get rid of Flash...

The install path might be different for you. Here is an even easier method to get around this issue:

1) Open terminal

2) Type in (or paste) the following:

sudo /Volumes/Adobe\ Flash\ Player\ Installer/Install\ Adobe\ Flash\ Player.app/Contents/MacOS/Install\ Adobe\ Flash\ Player

3) Enter your password when prompted

The install should now succeed.

This permission problem is still an issue even with the latest update from Adobe. Even after checking OS X 10.11.6 permissions (which are fine), it still fails without this workaround.
