Unless your text box has insets specified, the longest line of the centered text will be at the edge of the text frame.

If not you could make the text frame smaller with a double click to the handle of the text frame on the left or the right side.

You are correct, the longest lines do touch the edge of the text frame. I suppose my question is how to remove the white space from the beginning of a given line of text. I've seen some people manipulate it in a way that can even cause it to hang out of the text box. As an example: In this frame, I would like to remove the space from before the word "She", so that it starts directly on the edge of the text frame.

To have the left side of the text touch the edge of the frame, set it to align left.
