According to message #3 in Who moderates profile images now? (which will only be visible to Mods, since it is in the Mod forum) only employees are currently able to approve Avatars and profile images

The moderation queue is insanely slow.

Right now, it takes a few minutes just to bring up the list and every change resets that 60-120 second wait.It may be a while before your pic is OK'd, but it'll happen.

Just hold tight.  It sometimes takes a couple of days until it gets approved.

Is a Mod able to approve an Avatar, or is that reserved for Staff?

I think that's a staff thing.

I think we need a revision of what a moderator can and cannot do. Seems much has changed!?!?

<so if this has changed ---- why?>

Not sure it has changed.  I'm just not sure who approves avatars anymore.

I'm a moderator. When I go to @Roland_Rick's profile I can't find a place to approve his avatar. (I assume the camera is not your desired one?)

It normally shows up in the Mod Queue. Mods used to be able to approve them, I've done lots. I no longer moderate because of the ridiculous mod queue issues so not sure if it has changed.

I would like to be more helpful - how do I volunteer to help with being a moderator or someone who approves avatars or images? I guess this is my put me to work request...

I do have 5 kids and work, but I am always willing to help where I can. It is hard to not be intimidated by so many amazing and knowledgeable people, but moderating seems like something I def. can do if you like.

I don't think that's possible for use to moderate them. The permissions have changed, and that's hard to do on a case by case basis. I used to be able to approve both, but there were some other things I had permission to that I shouldn't have, and that was fixed. Then it was just profile photo that I could approve. That's gone too.
