I am a new Lightroom user.  I have an iMac running macOS Sierra Version 10.12.1.  I tried downloading my first group of photos and received message 1557 that "the files are not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom."  There was an option to update and the version check was unsuccessful.  Is Lightroom, Camera Raw 9.0 compatible with Sierra 10.12.1?

If you look at Help->about Photoshop Lightroom a dialogue will appear. At the top of that dialogue it will tell you the exact version of Lightroom you are using. You need to be using Lightroom CC 2015.7 in order to have support for your camera.

Which version of Lightroom are you running?

Which camera make and model are your photos from?

Lightroom does not use the Camera Raw plugin. That is for Photoshop only. Lightroom has the Camera Raw engine included in its core program code. So the version of Lightroom is the key metric.

Cameras supported by Camera Raw

The 5D Mark IV was first supported in Lightroom 6.7 (Cloud version CC 2015.7).

Which exact version of Lightroom CC 2015 are you running? Details are important to establish Raw file support.

This is Sierra changing permissions on folders LR needs to copy files to for the update to go through. This has been widely reported.

I suggest you manually don't load the .6.1 update for here.

Install Photoshop Lightroom

then install it and if that goes through try updating to .7.

This is an indication that you have a new camera which is not supported by your version of Lightroom.   What camera are you using, exact make and model?  What version of Lightroom?  From the menu select "About Lightroom" and give us the exact version number.

System information shows Lightroom version: CC 2015 [1014445]

That is CC 2015.0 (or perpetually licensed version 6.0).

You need to update to CC 2015.7.

If the Cloud desktop app does not detect the update, download and install it manually from

Install Photoshop Lightroom

Thank you all for your comments.  The issue I had was resolved by updating from Lightroom Cloud version 2015.0 to 2015.7.
