It took Illustrator a couple years to finalize the support for GPU beginning in 2014.

InDesign just began the process in 2016. It takes engineering time to work through the issues involved. The engineers decided to start with Mac computers with Retina Displays, but presumably will expand to all devices, Mac and Windows with minimum GPU abilities.
