Can I use LR 6 without importing images from external hard drive on a mac

Hello.  I have all my files stored on an external hard drive, I do not want to import over 80K worth of images.  I want to use LR photo editing without importing my images and keep them referenced on the external hard drive.  Does anybody know if this is possible?  Thank you.

You want to import them using the add option in the import panel. This will keep them on the external disk instead of copying them to your internal.
