Computer deactivation

Why is there no facility to deactivate a computer in lightroom or elements? Following a re-installation of windows plus the adobe software, neither prgramme would work as "the permitted number of computers was exceeded" OK, I understand the license but it took a couple of hours to track down an answer which is to use the chat facility

Of course there is a facility to do so in Lightroom. It is under the Help menu, select Sign Out. (I can't speak about Elements)

Thanks for that and I'll try it next time. The adobe agent on the chat line did not offer that option which would have been simpler. I have now re-looked at elements and a similar function is present. Both chat agents seem to be unaware of this so I'm not sure if it deactivates the registration of my computer or signs out of the adobe account?

I  had a very promt reply from Jim Hess confirming that there was no sign out in Lightroom. so how does one deactivate so that the program can be installed on a new PC?

I have a similar problem, there IS NO sign out in version 5 Help on my Lightroom pakage

That's because there isn't one on Lightroom 5 and previous versions. The number of activations were not tracked on those versions.

If you're using a Lightroom 5 then you don't "deactivate" on the old computer. First of all, you're allowed 2 installations. So you just use the same serial number and go ahead and install Lightroom 5 on the new computer. You might want to use the link I'm providing to help you Transfer your work from your old computer. Then when you're sure everything has transferred correctly you can simply uninstall Lightroom from the old computer.
