These are instructions to merge in the most recent version of Sketch (let me know if that's not what you're using):

To merge layers, tap on the Layer icon of the layer you want to merge down. That will open a dropdown menu with a number of options, one of them Merge Down. Tap that. (One thing: There will be no alert to warn you of the merge, so be sure about it; it cannot be reversed/undone.)
