Trouble deploying .jar file?

I'm telling my trechnical folks that they should deploy the webhelp.jar file as is, but they think there's something wrong with it.

I give the app developer a .zip file.
He incorporates the zip with the app into a .war file, to be exploded into the appropriate directory on deploying an EAR file.

They say "nothing has changed" in their deployment. This is the first I've heard of it. They say it started between 6/10 and 6/21. They believe that unzipping the .jar file is and always was part of the process. Of course, the .jar file is exactly the same as it has been in RH 7.

Has anyone seen this?

Here are some of the complaints they forwarded to me:

[xxxxxxx(userid) help-E]$ unzip -l webhelp.jar
Archive: webhelp.jar

caution: zipfile comment truncated
warning [webhelp.jar]: zipfile claims to be last disk of a multi-part archive;
attempting to process anyway, assuming all parts have been concatenated
together in order. Expect "errors" and warnings...true multi-part support
doesn't exist yet (coming soon).
error [webhelp.jar]: missing 3554673576 bytes in zipfile
(attempting to process anyway)
error [webhelp.jar]: attempt to seek before beginning of zipfile
(please check that you have transferred or created the zipfile in the
appropriate BINARY mode and that you have compiled UnZip properly)

Hello Harvey -

Sounds like your build person is dumping your ZIP file - intact - into the app build WAR file. As you know, that doesn't work. Builder needs to unzip your file into their app build environment then compile the WAR

That or the builder is doing an incremental update - should do a full rewrite.

Or both...

Been there, had that happen (just confirmed with [delete:your] [correction: MY] build manager).

Regards,
GEWB

Hello Harvey -

Oh my, a senior moment...I confirmed the behavior and our same experience with MY build manager while I was getting ready to type a reply suggesting you ask YOUR build manager if this was the case.

Sorry for getting everyone confused!

BTW, was that the problem?

Regards,
Gary

Hi Harvey

Just thinking out loud a bit here. I'm not sure how persuasive this will be, but you might just say that WebHelp has been around with RoboHelp since about 1998. And in the 10 years since it was introduced, Blue Sky/eHelp, Macromedia and Adobe haven't really seen any complaints or issues with this file being produced in the state it is. Had there been an issue, it surely would have been reported and corrected years ago.

Maybe that will help? I sure hope so.

Sincerely... Rick

Rick, thanks.

That would make too much sense, I think.

On rereading Gary's note, I understand now that they should unzip it into the build environment first, then build the .war file. I'll ask them about their sequence of steps.

The webhelp.jar file has changed significantly from previous versions, so I need to give them as much info as I can.

Gary,

You say they should unzip my help file it into their build environment. Does that include unzipping webhelp.jar?

I just tried it. The RH 7 webhelp.jar file can't be unzipped. Earlier ones can. Sounds like a bug, which I will now submit.

Hello Harvey -

We just zip up the entire generated project as-is so the jar file stays compacted.

I'm going to try generating without the applet option...

...still there.

Gary

FYI, Adobe is working on this. Some details on a separate thread here.
