It's because the buttons on the Control panel are bigger now, and "fell off" the right side of your display. You are in the right place, start unchecking buttons you don't use, until the Frame Fitting buttons (including Auto-fit) show up again. Make sure you leave Frame Fitting (Object) checked!

If you used to see Autofit on your display, it might be because the InDesign window is not sized to use the whole display, try maximizing it. That way you won't have to turn off any of the Control panel options.

If you maximized the InDesign window and they still don't show you can:

  • Set the display to a higher resolution, if available
  • Buy a larger, wider display (kidding)
  • Hide the buttons you don't need access to very often via the article I posted above
  • Access Auto-fit via Object > Fitting > Frame Fitting Options

As for your colleague's display: compare the resolution and the version. The buttons are larger in the latest versions of 2015 and in 2017. There is not an option to make them smaller but you can request it here: Wishform - Adobe InDesign . There is an option to make the Tabs smaller in the Tab Bar in 2017, but that will not help in this situation.

Sounds like you fixed it, but I threw a lot of ideas at you. Which one worked?

I was also having this same issue, except that I hid all the ones I don't use, and the autofit box still wasn't showing up! Until I clicked on the image I wanted to resize, then it appeared. So instead of it just being there, like it always was in the past, it now only shows up when there is an image to be fit. Super confusing but I'm sure someone thought it was a great way to save space on the bar.

Thank you! I kept unchecking different options in the customize control panel and nothing worked until I found your suggestion.
