Control Panel for Paragraph Styles not working with multiple lines selected

I'm working on an iMac (27-inch, Late 2013) using OS X El Capitan (10.11.6) with InDesign CC 2017 and have just developed an issue using the top "Paragraph" control bar and in the floating palette. If I have more than one line of text selected (same paragraph or multiple paragraphs) I am unable to make any typed in numeric changes to indents and spacing above and below. The first number goes in and then either the next number replaces the entire selection of text (on the page) or I hit enter not realizing it has switched to the selected text and erase all of it.

I'm not sure if this came in with the new upgrade to 2017 or if it started after I had already been using it.

Anyone having the same problem and if so were you able to fix it?

It's a known problem and there appears to be a workaround:
