How to insert text that doesn't last throughout?

Do you guys see that really really long bar? I'm currently trying to make a lyric video on after effects. Everytime I put in a new word, it defaults to something that long, causing me to have to cut it down manually rather than have it naturally last for a short time, such as the other bars in that above picture. Is there some setting I can change so it doesn't default to that length? I'd like the default length upon insertion to be shorter.

All help is appreciated.

you can change the default still footage duration (text included). under edit->preferences->import.

here I changed it to 4 seconds

and with un-checking the "create layers at composition start time" you can really speed up your workflow

now it behaves like this:
