OpenGL isn't being recognised, framerate is low during play back

What version of AE are you using? You should update your OS too. El Capitan 11.0.6 has a LOT of bug fixes - some related to AE since the version you say you're using.

The last version of AE to use Open GL was CS 5.5, aka Version 10.5.  It won't even run on El Capitan.

So you're kinda pissin' into the wind here.........
