Photos not recognized in Lightroom

I have been using Microsoft Photo Gallery, and now have signed up for Lightroom. However, I have noticed that about 20% of the photos are not recognized at all in Lightroom. E.g. I have a folder with 23 TIF files and 11 JPG files, all recognized by Microsoft Photo Gallery, and I can also open and view them in Explorer (so they are not corrupt). In Lightroom I see the 23 TIF files but only 4 of the JPG files. I have removed the folder in Lightroom and then tried to Import it again, but still it only sees 27 photos (4 jpg and 23 tif). I have also unchecked "Don't import suspected Duplicates" without any better result. Any idea why?

What about the file names of those photos? Do they have the same file names, except the extensions (tiff/jpg)?

If yes, go to Preference and clear off the "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos" option and try.

Thanks,

Sunil
