Is there a way to make master objects in InDesign editable by default instead of having to cmd+click?

As Bob said so eloquently, there's no preference that you can tweak to make master objects editable without command clicking. However, if this is really important to you, perhaps the answer lies in just creating a separate layer for these types of objects and just lock and unlock them as needed. You could even name the layer "Master Ojects". Take that InDesign!

If you select all of the pages in the Pages panel there is an option in the flyout menu to Override All Master Page Items. If you do that all MP items will be overriden, and the resulting page items will still be attached to their masters and will respond accordingly

Bottom line is that this may be the single biggest difference between InDesign and QuarkXPress.

Another master page option to look at is Allow Master Item Overrides on Selection. If that option is unchecked when an MP item is selected, the item is protected from overrides. So in the case below I could override all mp items on all pages and the orange rectangles would be overrriden but the blue rectangles would not. You could use this to only allow certain MP items to be overriden on a global override.
It would also be possible to have the overrides happen automatically via scripting. A script could listen for new page creation or create a page with the selective overrides applied.
