Effects and shading issue

I have created a calendar with the Table option.  Every other row is shaded.  I want to put text in the first row and apply a drop shadow. (I put the text on another layer)  The shading is green and the text is white.  Everything looks fine on screen.  However, when I print the calendar I see the green shading (100%) in the first row, the text with drop shadow AND a slightly darker green box which appears to be connected to the text frame.  What am I doing wrong?

Are you printing from a PDF?

No, not from a pdf.  Printing right from InDesign.

Try exporting to PDF and printing from that. Use the InDesign Acrobat PDF Presets. Test High Quality Print and compare the quality of the printing with printing using PDF/X-4.

I used High Quality Print and changed standard to PDF/X-4 (it had been set to "none")  It still doesn't work.  I thought maybe I needed to change the opacity of the text frame in Effects but that didn't work.  I also tried to print on another color printer and got the same result.  I have been watching videos on Lynda.com hoping I will see what I am doing wrong but no go.

Are to doing this:  File > Adobe PDF Presets > PDF /X-4 (from the drop-down menu)?

There shouldn't be a "none".

By the way, which version of InDesign and OS do you have?

My mistake, I was looking on the “export Adobe PDF” screen. I just tried

what you said below and still get the extra colored box though.
