Ever since I installed aftereffects 2017, the GPU shows unsupported and the camera movement is very choppy in element3d even for a simple cylinder. I tried to fix the GPU issue watching a tutorial for GPU being unsupported, but after that I can not now even enter into the preferences as AEFX crashes. Please can anyone help me?

the GPU shows unsupported

which GPU do you have? how does it show as unsupported?

but after that I can not now even enter into the preferences as AEFX crashes. Please can anyone help me?

reset your preferences. here's how:

Reset After Effects Preferences

if you are not quick enough than go to your file directory and delete the pref's file manually:

  • (Windows) \Users\[user_name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\After Effects\[version]
  • (Mac OS) /Users/[user_name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/[version]

find the pref file that looks like this and delete it: (it will have your version on it which is 14)
