Loss of detail in shadows in Develop Mode

I'm having an issue I've never experienced - seems to have just started happening.
My RAW files and the way they show up in Library are fine, but when I go to Develop to edit, any shadows / darker images I have get all blotchy and seem to have no detail... HELP.
They seem to export fine, but just for my own sake while editing, I'd prefer this not to happen... since it never has and shouldn't be!

Anyone out there ever had this happen??

What version of LR and OS are you using. See this post if using OSX Sierra with LR 4 or 5:

That image has a rather wide dynamic range to it. Isn't that what the adjustments in the develop module are for, to compensate and make corrections in such images? I find it hard to believe that what you are describing "just started" to happen. Use the develop tools for what they were designed for.

yeah - it was an issue with the update to OS sierra on mac.. the image in Raw and Library doesn't look like that, it was only in Develop mode, so it wasn't an actual issue with the camera file. issue solved, thank you !
