What's The Difference Between an Effect and an Adjustment?

Tried searching google, but kind of came up empty...

What's the difference between an effect and an adjustment?

I see that you can do many of the same things either using an effect, or using an adjustment.

Which do you use when?

Say I have 10 clips on my timeline, and I want to apply the EXACT SAME amount of contrast, color changes, and sharpness to clips # 2, #4, #5, #7 #8, and #10, (but not to clips 1, 3, 6 and 9). Would I use an effect or an adjustment? What would be the best way to do that?

There is no best or right way:

We have a saying: many roads lead to Rome.

But i would do one clip with the effects.

Select the other clips in one go (shift select)

Paste Attributes.

If all clips would need the same effects I would use an adjustment layer.

For the most part, adjustments are used to correct lighting, color temperature, tint, exposure, etc. There are also lighting adjustments.

Effects actually change the video by making a video look like an old home movie, adding a lens flare, cropping or clipping sections of the picture, etc.

Though there is also some overlap, of course.

Adjustments are usually made by increasing or decreasing levels of color, light, etc.

Effects are pre-programmed and are added to a clip.

IMO they are all effects.

E.g correcting color first you have to add the effect to make the adjustment.

And then there are fixed effects such as Motion (position, scale etc) and Opacity.
