rotate problem

I  have Photoshop cc 2017 and Window 10 and I am following different tutorial as a beginner on the web, my problem so far is the following:

when I try to rotate a canvas by pressing shortcut R or the rotate icon in the tool bar the following message appears: COULD NOT COMPLETE YOUR

REQUEST BECAUSE IT ONLY WORKS WITH OPEN GL ENABLED DOCUMENT WINDOWS

I am using the tutor supplied document and following the instructions repeatedly and same message

so what is my problem, what is a Open GL enable document

Hope someone can help me because I need this option for what I want to do with Photoshop, mainly drawing

You would need to go into Preferences > Performance and see if "Use Graphics Processor" is checked.

If it's dimmed out, that means your card is either not OpenGL 2.1 capable or does not have current video drivers.

Let me know how you do. If you have a desktop an outdated card can be replaced, if it's a laptop, you need a new laptop.

Thank you for responding, it's greatly appreciated.

I followed your instructions and "Use Graphics Processor" is not checked and it is dimmed out and yes I have a laptop and

according to you I would need to purchase a new laptop, my question is this: are you absolutely sure nothing can be done

whit my laptop.

I don't know exactly what you have, you would have to go to Help > System Report and paste the results in your reply.

Here's what you should understand first before you talk about replacing your laptop:

The Rotate Tool just rotates the image on the screen much like how you would turn a piece of paper on your desk to more easily draw on it. It does not change the Image itself.  It does not change the actual image, just the view on screen. If you can live without that function, then you can wait for a better laptop.

Image > Image Rotation does that. For example you change the file's orientation to straighten out a slanted photo and you want it to print out straight on paper.

Have you tried following the instruction to update your video drivers. small chance  it will fix the problem.

Since graphics are glued in and not changeable as in a desktop PC, there is no way out.

Also if you are learning Photoshop, skip the rotate step and keep learning Photoshop, then you will have a better idea of what your next laptop will be.

"Rotate Image" is not important.

Hi Gene

I understand what the rotate tool is about, when drawing I have always moved the paper around a lot so for me to be able to freely rotate

the canvas in Photo Shop while using a Wacom tablet make's it much more easier to draw, I know about the rotate image option but that's

not the same, other tool like "scrubby zoom" is dimmed out and I am sure the more I advance more tools will be dimmed so that piss me off

not to be able to used all the tools in Photo Shop.

I did try to update the driver but my laptop wont accept.

Ok, perhaps the graphics drivers are "custom" and you have to visit the maker of your model for graphics drivers updates.

Now on Intel card:

"Older Intel HD Graphics (for example 2000, 3000, 4000 series) cards are no longer being tested and are not officially supported in Photoshop. Some GL functionality is available for these cards, but newer features may not work."

From your System Info: OpenGL Drawing: Disabled.  That enables the Rotate Tool and Scrubby Zoom.

You also have 4 GB of ram, which is sparse for CC 2017.

You can install and run older versions of Photoshop like CS6 to see if it will take your old card.

Hi Gene

I guest bottom line pending are far i go learning Photo Shop i will need a new laptop up to date with sufficient graphic and ram capability for Photo Shop

I don't want to move backward to CS6, that's why i went from Windows 7 to 10 and in Photo Shop 2015 to 2017, but i will certainly follow your suggestion

on keeping on learning Photo Shop with this laptop to see at the end if i can or cant do without some of the tools.

I don't want to waist any more of your time, your reply's and comment's have been very enlightening to say the least.

You can also install CC 2015 if that's when it worked.

As I have learned, old hardware does not mix well with new software designed for more up to date systems. If it's 5 years or older, you will run into problems.
