We have this a lot. Clients work in older versions of Indesign so want files supplied back as IDML files.

If we package the files up and copy them to an external drive the links come up missing in the IDML file (Grey boxes).

We have to package the files up link the Indesign file to the images new location then create the IDML file, which is time consuming.

Is there a way of batching open Indesign files to link the images to the new location?

Are you enabling the "Update Graphic Links in Package" checkbox? If the links exist in a Links folder in the same folder as the InDesign document, InDesign should check that location and find them. Just a question, are your clients not knowledgeable enough to update missing links in an InDesign document? Is this really that big of an issue?
