List of Styles not Showing up?

When I go to Type | Paragraph (or character) | Styles, a list of previously-created paragraph/character styles is supposed to drop down, according to Apply paragraph and character text styles in Adobe InDesign, but that is not working for me. A blue text box shows up briefly, then fades and disappears without showing a listing of available styles. I had created a number of both text- and character styles in this document, earlier; have recently, successfully accessed both lists. Now that is not happening.

Wondering if one of you can show me what is going wrong here.

Using inDesign CC 2017.0 running on iMac elCapitan v. 10.11.6.

Thanks, all of you. I finally found the Styles panel(s) hidden behind the Links panel. No need for reinstallation.

Try restoring your InDesign preferences. Here's how:

Trash, Replace, Reset, or Restore the application Preferences

Thanks, Steve. Tried that but the behavior has not changed. I did notice some different folder names on my system, compared with what appeared on the help page. I replied to the help thread to explain what I found.

In the meantime, I'm still at sea about this. What makes this really weird is that I'm certain  that I was able to access my styles with no problem, just hours prior to posting this help message, when suddenly the lists of both para. and chara. styles stopped appearing; there was only a blue outline where the list should have appeared: blue outline that faded out, then nothing.

Best,

It's possible you have a bad installation of InDesign. It's easy to uninstall from the CC desktop app:

Then reinstall.

I'm confused about the list that you are thinking is going to drop down. I read the file you referenced, and here's what it says should happen when you choose Type > Paragraph Styles or Type > Character Styles:

From Apply paragraph and character text styles in Adobe InDesign

  • Open the Paragraph Styles panel: Choose Type > Paragraph Styles, or click the Paragraph Styles tab, which appears by default on the right side of the application window.
  • Open the Character Styles panel: Choose Type > Character Styles, or click the Character Styles tab on the right side of the application window.

Either command opens the appropriate panel, not a drop down list. What am I missing?

Jack,

InDesign has MANY panels, and they're easily misplaced. You can always get to every InDesign panel from the Window menu and its submenus.
