Cannot find my desktop in the folders panel on the left

I am trying to create a new folder for the year 2017 in my library, but I cannot access my desktop under the Macintosh HD folder on the left. My photos are organized on my desktop in the following format:

Family Photos

-year

     --month

          ---day

I cannot access the root folder "Family Photos", or any other folders on my desktop, in Lightroom. When I expand the Macintosh HD folder, it only shows me the existing photo folders that I have created within my root folder (i.e. I can see a folder for 2014, 2015, etc.,  but I cannot see the "Family Photos" folder.)

How can I get the Macintosh HD folder to fully expand? Thanks!

In the Library Module right click on one of the folders e.g 2014, 2015 and from the popup select "Show Parent folder"
