if you 'test' your file (ctrl-enter), do you hear your sound?
the period advances the timeline and the comma plays it backwards.

increase the height of your layer to see the wave form.
assign your sound's sync property to stream if you want to play/pause the timeline in the ide and play/pause your sound.

The flat sound wave, and the audio not working, can be explained by you using 32 bit WAV. Open your WAV in Audition and do a Save As, so that you can change the sound to be 16 bit (and 44.1 kHz while you're at it). If it was already 16 bit you might think about normalizing the sound, to bring its levels up enough to notice the waves in the timeline.
The not hearing the sound when you start from a few frames in is because you have the sync set to Event. Try using Stream. Also, there's currently a bug where if you have Event sound starting on frame 1, the audio doesn't get exported if you do export to video. That will be solved if you start Event sound from frame 2, or use Stream from frame 1.
