new projects from old

Here's the assignment:

We have a RoboHelp project with about two dozen books (with associated sub-books). Can some or all of these be turned into merged projects?

Hi, MergeThis,

I copied Mr. Grainge's tutorial, but it looks fairly intimidating; what would be wrong with:

--creating new projects for each book
--importing existing topics into those books
--deleting "old" topics once they are safely ensconced in the new projects
--then merging new projects into the existing "main" project

Seems like that would be easier and faster...

Not that there's anything wrong with that...

The issue with merged projects that is addressed by Peter's method is "external" links (cross links between projects). The beauty is in having nothing in the master project but a redirect to a child project that actually holds the root level "home page" and any other topics at that level. That way, all "external" links use the path "../otherfolder/externaltopic.htm."

This relative link will be done automatically, but not at first. As long as you have all the child projects under the \projects folder, your links will at first appear as absolute links (C:\blah_blah). After you close the dialog, then double click the link again, you'll find that RH has assigned a relative path.
