Placing objects that are cropped to the content

I have some objects on individual pages in an InDesign document that I'd like to place into a different ID document. I'd like to "crop" them to just the content, not place the page itself. I've worked out that I can do that by going from ID to PDF to AI. But is there a more direct route?

Just copy and paste straight from InDesign.. you're making it more complicated than needs be.

You've got the correct answer already but note that any item that you copy/paste from one document to another will also carry the original link with it. If you use the edit>original command it will edit that content in both files.
