I haven't the words to label my problem, but I'll describe it and attach a screen shot.
At the top of my open InDesign CC 2017 document, there has been a bar (if that's what it's called) that had
two icons to the very left: one for type, and one for paragraph.
For some reason I have not been able to access this recently, even after exploring every menu and Preference.
Here is a screen shot of what I THINK is that bar, that I got from an Adobe search I made.
It shows, I think, that bar's appearance when the type icon is pressed.
Thank you,
Morty
YES!—wonderful! Thank you so much, Sandee.
You know, InDesign is wonderful, but I'm a spoiled long-time Mac guy where
things generally can be guessed-at.
"Control" panel—very general and vague.
I'm working with a 390-page book I prepared in Word and placed in InDesign
with many photos and other illustrations.
Is it possible to query you from time to time, about a problem?
Best,
Morty

Click inside a text frame. If you still can't see it, we'll look at other solutions.

I just thought of something. Do you have the "bar", which is actually the Control panel for anything? Like if you select a picture.
If not, go to the Window menu and see if there is a checkmark next to Control. If not, choose Control and see what happens.

Yes. You can query me using the message feature on these forums.
But you’re better off posting a question here as more people are on constantly.

Just wanted to say, Sandee, that I found no place in the InDesign Preferences to select
Control panel so that it automatically appears whenever I open a doc.
Is there a place? (my final question!)

It's part of the workspace. It's either there or it's not. It is contextual so what is displayed is dependent on what tools you have active or the selection.
Do you have the application frame active? If not, turn it on.

Yes, the Application Frame as been active.
What I'd been looking for is the Control Panel, as Sandee Cohen. told me.
Thanks Bob,

Morty,
If you ever lose it again go to Window > Workspace > Reset Essentials.

That's one of the things I tried, Sandee, and no go.
Thanks for responding. I am working my way through your 2014 Visual QuickStart Guide InDesign CC.
I've upgraded my InDesign to 2017, but at 81 and having used QuarkXPress previously it's kind mind-boggling,
though a WONDERFUL application.

Morty,
OK, here's something you can try. Quit InDesign and then restart the program. Then IMMEDIATELY press ALL these keys at once and keep holding:
On the Mac press Command-Option-Shift-Control.
On Windows press Ctrl-Alt-Shift.
Hold until you see a dialog box that asks if you want to reset the preferences. Say Yes.
Let's see if that helps.
