This 'cryptic' message really means- Lr cannot find a location where it can WRITE the files when it is reading them.
Several possibilities- No Read/Write permissions for the destination folder, a full disk that will not accept more files, a destination not available.
Check the Destination, check the folder permissions with the OS.

Which version of the mac OS?
Which exact version of Lightroom?
Which folder is the Destination panel in the Export dialog pointed?
If that is an external drive, what disk format is it?
Using Finder, what are the user and group permissions on the destination folder and its parent?

Did you change the permissions as instructed? Show us a screen capture of the permissions on destination folder, and another screen capture of the Lightroom import dialog box so we can read what the Destination folder is.
