Did you recently upgrade from an earlier version of OS X to Sierra? Lightroom 5 tethering for many cameras was broken starting with OS X 10.11 El Capitan; it may have been because of changes made in the operating system. Tethering for Nikon and other brands should work in Sierra if you are using Lightroom 6.4 / CC 2015.4 or later.

I just downloaded a trial version of Lightroom CC. Tethering still will not work

After installing the trial did you update the software. If not download the LR6.8/2015.8 patch:

So it still will not tether. No big deal. Not a big upgrade over LR5.

Did you remove the storage card before connecting the camera?

One other thought. Try trashing the prefs before rolling-back to LR5.
Quit Lightroom
Press and hold down the Opt(Alt) and Shift keys while launching Lightroom
Keep the two keys pressed for a couple of seconds after double-clicking (control-clicking) to launch the app or launch by clicking the doc icon if you have one.
When you release the Shift & Alt keys a dialog box will appear asking to reset the preferences. Simply click the button “Reset Preferences”

Thanks for all of your help. I reset the preferences, to no avail. So it goes.
