Yesterday I upgraded from Lightroom 5 to Lightroom 6. In the past the photos were loaded into Lightroom and I had the option to pick and choose which ones were imported. Now the photos are imported directly into folders in Windows without the option of selecting which photos I wish to import.
So you have most likely turned on the simplified Import dialog box. Click the triangle at the bottom left to switch back to the normal Import dialog box.

But there is no reason to import photos because you upgraded from LR 5 to LR 6.
You should be upgrading the LR 5 catalog to a LR 6 catalog, not importing. Use the Lr 6 menu command File->Open Catalog and select your LR 5 catalog.

I am importing new photographs from the camera. I have already updated the catalogue.

The import dialog box from Lightroom 5 to Lightroom 6 is identical (except for LR 6.2, which is different). What is the exact version number of your Lightroom (go to Help->System Info)
Have you selected the simplified Import dialog box? If so, click on the triangle at the bottom left of the import dialog box.
