take a look at two properties:
for a simple -- no-container -- component mouseEnabled property is what you're looking for.

Have you tried mouseEnabled = false?
Thanks a lot guys. I was looking at the Flex Language Reference page for DisplayObject, whereas mouseEnabled is only introduced as of InteractiveObject, which is why I didn't see it.
