Highly Unresponsive/Laggy Lightroom Performance...

I'm at a loss and really needing some help at this point in time. I am, or used to be until this problem destroyed my work computer, a working professional and I am effectively shut down at this point in time as a result.

The problem is effectively an unresponsive and/or laggy Lightroom. Sometimes simply doing anything causes my screen to go black for 10-15 seconds at times.. other times it'll just lag for 5-10 seconds and then works again. Sliders are very sluggish. Importing is nightmarish.

It's been like this for a while and I've just been trying everything I can find attempting to fix this problem on my own. I'm at a loss.

I've been through dozens of guides, I've checked and unchecked the GPU box....... I've purged the cache, I've trashed my preferences, I've rolled back my camera raw, I've optimized my catalog, I've adjusted my preview size, I bought faster hard drives, I removed all my presets, I reinstalled. I don't sharpen my photos in Lightroom until the end..

I mean, I've honestly tried everything I can find.

I don't even know what to do at this point. My MacBook pro is a fraction of the machine this one is and it runs circles around it. Everything else on this computer is amazing. I don't know why Lightroom is running so slow.

Any help is appreciated.

for what it's worth Capture One has a subscription as well as "buy outright" - subscription sounds like the ticket for us. not looking forward to hassel of the change over but I think the time has come

hi john,

Is your catalog is on external or internal drive?

As you have mentioned you have tried GPU on/off scenario. Could you please upload a video showing the slowness in your machine.

Thanks

Anshul

Are you referring to slowness in the Develop module, or Library Module, or both, or somewhere else? Please state this clearly.

If it's the develop module where the problem is, then the location of the catalog file (internal or external drive) is not the problem.

Are you doing a lot of brushing and/or spot healing on each photo?

I rarely do spot heals or brushing in Lightroom.

The lag in the Library is bad, but within the develop module is horrible.

My catalog spans multiple drives. - My primary drive is a brand new Samsung Extreme SSD, 500gb, only half full (1600ish photos). My archive (64,000 photos) sits on an external 12TB drive.

but I mean, honestly, an i7 with 50gb of ram using an SSD and having a EVGA GTX 1080 video card... I shouldn't have this problem.

Spot and gradient adjustments kill this computer.

What i7? Please give the exact model.

How big is your monitor in pixels (not inches)?

What size images are you working with (in megapixels, not megabytes)?

That's a reasonably fast processor but very large RAW images and dual humongous monitors, it could be that your CPU and GPU just aren't fast enough. Would you try an experiment? Disconnect one monitor and see if the speed improves.

Sigh. Instant improvement. Didn't get rid of the lag entirely but it's at least usable now.

This sucks.

I mean, obviously happy to have a working machine again but now I'm less one monitor.

Nope, lag is back again. ugh.

It's total input lag. Everything just completely lags out.

No clue how to get a video of this. I'd have to use some screen recording or something.

Hi John,

I suspect you are suffering from the same problems as many other. LR has progressively become slower and less stable over the last few editions. Adobe are aware of it (but are masters of acting as if you are the only one having an issue) but as of yet have done little to bring about any real fixes. numerous threads about it here and elsewhere on the net

I've been a massive supporter of Lightroom for many years, have helped several photographers move to it and get it setup well, but now face the reality that for too long I have worked through laggy behavior, slow refresh, screen blackouts, and just plain not wanting to open.

I understand that everyone has different computer setups etc and that can make things for a developer difficult but having trialed Capture One extensively, and seeing how easily it runs I can't help think if Phase can do it with CO, why cant Adobe with Lightroom?

As for for your specs etc - they are pro level files, from a pro level camera, and a pro level computer - as a pro software LR should be able to deal with that.

If I can't get this fixed I'll definitely be forced to ditch Lightroom. I don't have a choice. This is shutting me down and ruining my business, and my sanity.

Oddly enough, I have no issues on my MacBook, which sucks so bad because it's just this tiny little 15" monitor but I can edit sooooo much faster on it using Lightroom. Editing the same files I can rip through them like hot butter... easily.

I just don't want to use that tiny little machine.

haha...I hear you on the sanity front!! I use Davinci Resolve for color grading video - its insanely resource heavy, needs very good hardware. Resolve runs great on my machine...but LR...well.....

we are intrenched in photoshop but have all but dropped all other adobe products...and LR is on the chopping block too - been holding out as we know LR so well but ....

Man I hear ya, I am so heavily invested into this machine at this point and with how many clients I have I can't afford this level of downtime.... and that's my issue, switching to a new software at this point would be so difficult and I'd have more downtime as the learning curve is steeper than I'm willing to invest right now. I really may not have a choice though if we can't get this problem worked out.

I'm just tired of spinning my wheels and apologizing to clients. Today for example, it's taken me 8 hours today to process this house shoot. I normally do these in 30 minutes, easy.

This is just killing me.

Don't expect Adobe to care.

I've got a brand new MB Pro Touch 15" with the 4gb GPU and it's terrible, once you start using adjustment brushes it becomes unusable.

Turning the GPU on/off doesn't make any difference other than making it slower (off)

Hey guys -
This was giving me fits, like you I tried nearly everything to get this fixed - drivers, cache purges, optimize catalog, you name it - like the OP, I tried it all. But yesterday spent several hours on this and 3 things seem to have made version 7.5 usable again. For reference the program has no excuse being slow on my system, PCI-E SSD for my main drive, i7-6950 EE proc OC to 4ghz, 64 gigs of ram, GTX 1080 video card.

I made sure all short cuts run the program as an administrator, then I rolled back to version 7.3 (last one that was quick for me) - it was still slow. So I deleted the previews folder in my lightroom catalog folder. Then I updated back to version 7.5.

This has made the program usable again, minus waiting for previews to rebuild when I access folders for the first time. There are still some issues I think with version 7.5, it is still not as snappy as version 7.2 was (I believe there may have been some changes with the Windows 10 April 2018 update that messed up how LR is functioning) - but it is actually usable and I can do my work and run my business again.

Hope it helps some of you that are experiencing this, while we wait for Adobe to get it together and fix our beloved LR!

For what it is worth, my Lightroom 6 took forever to start up, either froze or not responding for minutes.I spent the last couple days trying to find out what was the problem. I have de dell XPs 8700 with 32 g RAM, where lightroom worked fine with until about a week  ago.

I uninstalled, reinstalled, updates nvidia driver, nothing changed, defragged, optimized etc.,nothing.

Out of frustration I unplugged the external harddrives (3), hopla problem solved. One of the external drives was the culprit.

hope it helps you too.
