It came to my attention recently while testing an Urdu Nastaleeq font that Indesign still do not support '[GSUB LookupType 8] Reverse Chaining Single Substitution'
In order to render complex Nastaleeq scripts correctly, reverse chaining substitution is required as defined by OpenType standard. Lack of implementation for this crucial lookup means that we have no alternative than to switch our projects to other Desktop Publishing Tools unfortunately.
Therefore, I kindly request developers of Indesign to extend support in its typing engine for this particular GSUB as millions of Urdu Nastaleeq readers are dependent on it for their publishing work. Here is a demonstration of how the font should be rendered with reverse chaining support in Word (correct) vs Indesign (broken):
