After effects shy switch won't UN-shy

I'm using After Effects 2015cc on a Mac osx 10.9.5. The shy switch won't un-shy my hidden layers, and I need to get to them to edit. I've seen another post where the GM fold plugin was causing the problem, but I don't have that plugin. I'm not using any third party plugins in the entire project. I've tried restarting after effects, and my computer and deleting prefs list but nothing helps. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

  1. Exact Ae version? full numbers please.
  2. can you recreate the problem? does this happen with a fresh project
  3. show us some screenshots
  4. try different Ae version - you can install alongside your current version just make sure that you got "remove previous versions" disabled upon updating.
