The problem is that with spell checking, it keeps
flipping to French. I went into preferences>dictionary and tried to
delete the French dictionary. It did not work. Closing and re-opening
the file did not help. Restarting the computer did not help. The spell
check might occasionally work in English for a page or so, then it
flips to French. It will not go back to English unless I let it sit
for at least a half-day. Then it will check a couple pages in English
and flip back.
The language setting is a Character-Level attribute.
Check all your Paragraph and Character styles, and change the Language attribute there to English. If that doesn't work, Try doing a Find/Change to change the Language Attribute of all text to English (do this on a copy of the file, in case something goes wrong).

The dictionary used in text is dependent on what language is applied to the text, either manually, or with a style.
