I'm using In Design CC 2017.
Have a 100 plus page document and wanted to place some text within a custom shape over an image - and after tinkering for a while, found I couldn't put any text inside any shapes.
If I open a new document, everything works fine.
And I can create a shape, fill it with text, copy from new doc and paste into my longer document and ahve things work.
But I'm trying to figure out why it's not working right in the first place.
Any suggestions of common problems I should look for?
Have looked at layer order and making sure nothing is locked. But I can't even get it to work on a blank page with a regular ellipse or rectangle - so I'm guessing I must have messed up some setting.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Hi together,
converting a graphic frame ( e.g. with arbitrary shape ) to a text frame for typing in can be done in two ways:
1. Select the graphic frame and convert it to a text frame by using the menu command:
Menu: Object > Content > Text
2. Click with Text tool inside the graphic frame.
But this will only work if the InDesign preferences are set accordingly.
Preferences > Type > [ x ] Type Tool Converts Frames to Text Frames
Hope, this helps.

It could be corruption of the file. Try saving as IDML (File > Save as > InDesign CS4 or later [IDML]). Gets rid of corruption. Reopen in InDesign.

hi Steve -
If I save that as IDML and reopen, will I lose any features? Or is this a safe way to fix a corrupted file?
Thanks
(I'll try it on a backup - but just curious; I assume if you go from a new version and save to an older one, you might lose any features that weren't present in the old program)

Here's an article on IDML creation:

If not a corruption, it might be a text wrap issue. Select the text frame and in Text Frame Options, tick Ignore Text Wrap.
