I bought this image but don't like the solid white background from about her right shoulder to the top and from about the fan base to the top. Could I make a gradient that goes from her dress in white and fades to transparent? Could anyone walk me through the process?

Add an empty layer on top select the area you do not like add your gradient into that area in the empty layer and blend the layer in using opacity, fill, blending, feathering, masking erasing etc.
