InDesign file will not export

I have a single page file, a large poster (3.7 MB) with 10 small B+W images and  about 20 blocks of text. The file will not export fully as either a PDF of a JPG.

The exported file shows only the images, not the text or the background color.

Using INDD 5.5 on a Mac Pro with OS 10.9.5.

I have used this InDesign program for years on this computer and have had no problems before in exporting to PDF.

Help will be greatly appreciated!

1. How is the background color done? Which method?
2. Are the non-printing objects on a layer which has print turned off?.

I did the background color as an underlaying rectangle and it exported perfectly! Thanks so much for you advice.

The color had previously been applied at setup and when it printed white (for some reason) the white text was not visible and hence only the photos appeared.
