Have tried running photoshop without 3rd party plug-ins.  Have tried putting ~ in front of Spaces directory in Required directory.  Makes no difference. Any help out there?

Thanks for the response. Which system info do you want? I can't access anything from within Photoshop as it stops working on the initial splash screen.

Hi David,

Sorry you are having so much trouble. Have you tried loading a previous version of Photoshop onto your system? It's quite possible to use Photoshop 2015 while retaining 2017 through the 'Previous version' category of the desktop app-I think doing this might help us distinguish whether this is a version problem or a general computer/operating system issue.

pvs.png

Could you also try holding down ctrl-alt-shift and with those keys depressed launch Photoshop. An alert box will appear. This allows you to start with full administrative rights. This can be a little tricky as holding those same keys down will also generate an alert allowing you to delete your preferences. The trick here is to have those three keys depressed before launching Photoshop to get the administrative permission dialog and to press the three keys a fraction of a second after launching Photoshop to get the preference deletion dialog. The following video from JulieAnne Kost explains about preferences

Preferences in Photoshop

If you have not already done so, it might be useful to  delete your preferences. I prefer the method that requires folder navigation where you move the preference file as it then can serve as a backup. When Photoshop cannot find the preference file it creates a new one. On Windows 10 locating the settings folder is made awkward as it is a hidden folder. You need to go to File Explorer options in the Control panel, then View and under Advanced settings select the radio button 'Show Hidden files, folders and drives. Also uncheck 'Hide protected operating system files(Recommended). Now navigate to

C:\Users\<UserProfileName>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2017\Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 Settings

The preference file is called Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 Prefs.psp. Simply move it to the desktop and see if Photoshop will now start holding down ctrl-alt-shift to get the administrative permission dialog.

I will try to Update the Photoshop CC (2017) version (there is no install option in the Creative Cloud app) but not until I have processed some images.

I've processed what I need to and re-installed the latest Photoshop CC (2017) (When I uninstalled I chose not to save preferences).

When I tried to run Photoshop it stopped working at the splash screen with the same error that the previous version of 2017 did.

Hi David,

Did you just update any component of the system? e.g Graphics Card or Hard drive/ Motherboard.

Please check if you have some update pending for Windows.

If Yes, please install them.

If you are using AMD Graphics Card, please install the latest driver.

Regards,

Sandeep

No components updated. Windows 10 downloads and installs updates automatically, I can't see any pending updates, automatic maintenance ran yesterday. I'm using a  Nvidia card.

Thanks  David

and move the file 'Standard MultiPlugin.8bf' to the desktop? Does Photoshop now start?

Hi David,

It looks as if we are getting a cascade of faulting elements here. Your latest report shows Skin.8bf is the problem. This is part of the Nik Collection of plugins from Google. Try removing it to the desktop you will find it in two places

C:\Program Files\Google\Nik Collection\Dfine 2

C:\Program Files\Google\Nik Collection\Dfine 2\Dfine 2 (64-Bit).

Now all I'm doing here is trying to locate the area of the program causing the problem. Moving all these plugins is taking away a lot of Photoshop functionality.

So far we have moved

dicom.8bf ,

Standard MultiPlugin.8bf

U3D.8bi

Skin.8bf

To see what these plugins affect we can call System Info under Help in Photoshop. You can't do that as Photoshop will not start but here is part of mine. If you copy and paste the list of required plugins to a text file then search the list for the plugins you have removed you will find what is affected.

It would be interesting to know what happens when Skin.8bf is removed as it is the only non Adobe plugin we have found so far and the Nik collection is known to sometimes cause crashes in Photoshop. I would not expect removing Skin.8bf to solve the problem though as you have already tried launching Photoshop with 'shift' depressed (this disables third party plugins) but it is worth trying. If it were to work then you would put the other plugins back one at a time and check Photoshop opens.

Have you tried using the Creative Cloud Cleanup tool?

Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems

This should remove every trace of Photoshop 2017 far more thoroughly than a normal uninstall and you should try it as this is a process of elimination. There is precious little information online about this problem. The only thing I could find suggested a graphics card problem, but starting in 'safe mode' should counter that usually, but not always, so make sure you get the latest Nvidia driver from their website-don't rely on Windows updates as they are generally out of date.

I actually think you need an Adobe engineer to help you here as they have access to reports we just don't have on this forum. I would suggest posting on the feedback forum which is frequented by Adobe software engineers.

I've removed the Skin.8bf (both of them) to the desktop. The faulting module path is now Sky.8bf

The Creative Cloud Cleaner page looks as if it needs an update. Is it ok to use with Windows 10 and if I use it, will it leave the Photoshop CC 2015.5 installation intact as this currently works?

Thank you for your help. If I can safely use the cleaner tool with Windows 10, leaving the 2015.5 installation intact, I'll give that a try before posting on the Photoshop Family Customer Community  or contacting customer care.

Hi David,

The cleaner tool is Win 10 compatible. Just from Control Panel remove Photoshop 2017, earlier versions should be listed there and left alone. If it does affect 2015.5 then you can always reinstall it from the desktop app. Obviously with multiple installs of the same program it is possible a cleaner will remove something needed by the earlier version  and I suppose technically you should remove all versions of Photoshop and run the cleaner. If I was doing this I would remove CC2017 and 2015 using Control Panel then run the cleaner so it is Photoshop free. Restart the computer and use the desktop app to install 2015.5 followed by CC2017 with all the updates.

Hi just an update. A tech took over my machine, removed all photoshop files manually not only does the 2017.1 version not work but nor does the 2015.5 version that he reinstalled.  He told me to wait 2 weeks until Microsoft and Adobe release updates. By trying to update 2017.0 to 2017.1 I have lost the use of photoshop for 3 weeks (supposing that the updates fix the issue). To me this is unacceptable I am struggling to find a reason to renew my subscription when it is due.

I've posted on the Photoshop family community site a day ago but not received a response. (To be fair I didn't ask a direct question).

I'm about to go out to a meeting at which I should be discussing a community photo project but at the moment I'm going to have to rule myself out as it will be at least 2 weeks before I have access to Photoshop again.  I am not a happy person and have little faith in new updates solving the issue but at the moment I don't have any other options.

Hi David,

I agree this is totally unacceptable. The tech might know the release schedule for Adobe products, but Microsoft-I think not! In England we call this being fobbed off-don't worry that's not a swear word. I can accept CC2017 not working but the tech clearly broke the CC2015.5 installation. I'm not privy to what any update will fix, but I do know your problem is not a common one and so would not be surprised if in two weeks your installation still doesn't work. I actually feel guilty as I advised you to do this David. Usually these technicians are very good, and maybe this one was as well, but none the less we certainly have a problem. Not knowing what the tech did means I can't offer much assistance. Do you know if the tech used the cleanup tool?  I do have a suggestion, but already know that it will go down like a lead balloon. What you could try is creating a new Windows profile- as an Administrator and try loading CC2017 0n that profile. Believe it or not doing that does sometimes fixs a broken app.

I have access to a back office forum here and will post a request with Adobe for some urgent help. The Adobe people there are very helpful and take customer support seriously, but are not engineers-however they do know people in the company on staff who I hope might be able to get you back up and running.

No need to feel guilty.  The tech didn't use the cleaner tool. I did prior to contacting them.  It only seems to work if you don't uninstall the software first.  ie if I had uninstalled 2017.1 the option to clean that, was not available. If the install was present I could clean it. (Which I did). The only other thing I can think of apart from trying a new windows profile is to clean all, but that would include the Creative Cloud desktop app and I don't know how I would get that back to re-install the software. (I've also lost my old CS5 installation as the tech deleted it, it's not available on the desktop app although CS6 is which I didn't purchase).

AS far as the community project I mentioned above is concerned, their display system is delayed so if I could get up and running soon I might be able to contribute.

Don't be afraid to clean it all. Make sure you back up your files to any other Adobe programs. Once you have done so, download the Creative Cloud app and install the Photoshop version you need.

Hi David,

you are quite right about the Cleaner tool, it will selectively remove the apps you choose and there is no need to go through Control Panel. I guess I have been lucky as I haven't used it for years and was just going by memory. Benjamin has given you the link to download the desktop app so that's not a problem and you can safely remove everything knowing it all can be re-downloaded. Below is a link to the source media for CS5. I think it will probably install without a serial as the original is almost certainly in the Win 10 registry. The same will apply to the activation status, but we can always get that reset should it be a problem.

Download Adobe Creative Suite 5 products

I don't know what you plan to install, but try to do it in chronological order. For example after running the Cleanup tool and restarting the PC run the installer for CS5, then install the desktop app, in the app go to 'Find Additional Apps --------> Previous versions------->View Previous Versions and then install CC2015.5 or anything else on the list on pressing the 'Install' button next to Photoshop. Finally put back CC2017.1
