All the brushes are visible on the brush menu, but when you click on the brush and use it to 'edit' the picture, it leaves a pin as if you did something, but it does not actually make the edit. So it's like the brushes are there, but they just don't work.
Also, when you click show mask overlay, there is no red marking indicating that any changes were made.
My little one was pressing buttons recently and after that is when this problem developed... is there any way she locked something?

Check the Flow and Density settings for your brush. Maybe these are set to a low value, or zero. In that case, using the brush will have no visible effect.
If you change these (or any other) adjustment brush settings before placing a pin, then that change will be remembered as a default.

Oh, just to add: this probably happened because of the number keys on the keyboard.
Pressing 1 sets the adjustment brush to 10% "flow", 2 is 20% ... 9 is 90% ... 0 sets it to 100%.
