Importing Word hyperlinks moves links a number of characters?

I'm getting very odd behaviour from Indesign when importing a large Word document with >1000 hyperlinks. Random links get shifted a number of characters to the left in the paragraph. What could be causing this?

Tried with CS5 and CC2017, Word 2007, Word 2016, on four different systems. I also tried splitting the file in smaller parts, no joy. No error when importing Word document with a single paragraph, but 20 pages is enough to cause the error to appear again, apparently randomly.  A lot less faulty links when importing whole document as an RTF but still quite a lot of instances where the link has shifted in the text. See attachment.

If it were an InDesign file, I'd guess that the file itself has become corrupted. But I'm not a high-powered Word user so that would be purely a guess.
