XAVC-S and .MXF files and Premiere Elements 15

Sony PXW-X70 camera set to XAVC-S and files have .MXF extension.

Can these files be edited in Premiere Elements 15 via "Add media" ?

Is there a driver needed for these files?

On-line research didn't directly discuss the above.

Some suggestions were to purchase software to convert files to MPEG or MOV.

If the files are coverted, is there any resolution etc loss from the original .MXF file?

My PC is Win 7 Pro, 64-bit OS

i7-4790K CPU @.00 GHz,

16 GB RAM

Please accept my amateur knowledge.

Thank you

Can you send a clip via dropbox and I'll try it?

Premiere Elements can edit X-AVC files but not MXF.

So I'll be interested to hear the results of Bill's experience.

Converting files is never a good idea, unless you really know what you're doing. You can often make video files less rather than more compatible.

Curiosity kills the cat....

Based on a quick read of both the camera instruction manual and some Sony literature, Premiere Elements will edit whatever comes out of the PXW-X70.

The PXW-X70 camera when set to XAVC-S makes .MP4 files.  XAVC (without the -S) makes .MXF files.  It appears that that camera does not have an XAVC (without the -S) choice.  The other choice that does come with that camera is AVCHD.  There is an optional 4K upgrade.

Elements will edit Canon mxf (long gop mpeg) on the mac side.

On windows one has to change the extention to mpg.

EDIT; just tested a pxw-x70 mxf file on the mac if you change the extention also to mpg one can import the file.

Does not let you do this on Windows.

Well, maybe not so much.  I found an owner on another forum who has one and says when he "shoots HD at 10 bit, 4:2:2" it records in MXF files.

Short answer: no, Elements does not support the codec (btw its XAVC HD, XDCAM)

If you set camera to avchd: yes.

But will throw away your nice features.

Premiere Pro will do what you want.

or you might want to have a look at Magix Video Pro X.
