Window Maximizing When Activated Bug

Hello,

I'm having an issue in Photoshop cc 2017 where any time I click on the bar that you would click on in order to move a Photoshop window around it maximizes. An example would be imagine you have two Photoshop files open we'll call them File A and File B. Now let say you currently have File B active you're painting in it dodging burning ect.... now lets say you need to go to File A real quick for what ever reason. You go to click on the top bar of the File A window (one time) to activate it and bring it forward but it maximizes the window as if you had double clicked on the bar. Also if File A is maximized already and I'm working in File B and Click once to  activate File A (the already maximized window) the file A window will de-maximize to the smaller option. So my question is how do i fix this\turn this off. lastly i know that you can maximize and de-maximize windows in most programs including Photoshop by double clicking the top bar but my issue is that it is maximizing when i click it only one time to activate a window that i need to work in. I've tested it and it only happens in Photoshop I've tried chrome and other programs and i don't have the issue. I've also used different mice and they all do it.

A little info

os: Windows 10

Photoshop cc 2017 most up to date as of Feb 10, 2017

Never had the issue until a few month ago and I've used Photoshop for years

I work with tabbing of windows turned off

FileAB.JPG

File A and B are open. B is active.

FileAB_click.JPG

need to work in File A so I Click on the File A  bar ONE TIME only.

Screen_max.JPG

Immediately after clicking. The File A window maximizes.

How do I turn this off or fix it?

Thanks for the update,

Please try the steps below:-

  • Try switching the port where your mouse is connected and check if the issue persists, remove other external devices in the meanwhile.
  • Use CTRL+TAB to deal with the tabs maximizing.
  • I found something similar to your issue but the fix deals with editing Preferences, You could rename the tw0001.dat to tw0001.dat.OLD

If present, You can find this file in this location:-C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 folder.

Hi PumaWhsiperer,

Please backup and then reset the current workspace you are working in. Have a look at Adobe Photoshop workspace basics

A long-time (yet seldom-mentioned) Windows shortcut is that double-clicking a title bar will Maximize the window (or Restore it, depending on the current state), and sounds like that is what is happening with your floating windows. Until you solve the "I am clicking once but Photoshop is registering a double-click", you might try the tabbed interface: Window > Arrange > Consolidate All to Tabs.

You might not like it as much as your floating windows at first, but you won't get that behavior unless you click the main title bar.

Thanks for the reply!

I've thought about going back to tabs, but I'm holding out on it cause I feel it slows my work flow down quite a bit. That being said I may just suck it up and do it cause this double click issue can be quite annoying at times.

You are very welcome. As a user like you, I can't fix Photoshop, of course—just offer alternatives—but you already have Adobe staff member Akash Sharma on the thread, which is great if it ends up being a Photoshop issue.

I know you said you switched out the mouse, but is the current mouse driver up to date? It sounds more like a mouse issue (or some other conflict), as I haven't ever seen this come up on this forum before. You might google your mouse and photoshop to see if others have run with your set up have run into the same issue.

I actually didn't think to check for a driver update....Just updated my mouse, it's a logitech G602, and sadly the problem persists.

I have tried replicating the issue with other programs from google chrome to 3ds max to regular old windows explorer, and none of them exhibit a single mouse click registering as a double click. That along with the fact that  other mice(mouses?) produce the same result makes me think that it is a photoshop issue.

Well, the good news is that you can keep working for now.

If you figure out the solution on your own, it would be helpful to me (and others reading this thread) if you could come back and let us know what was going on.

Happy Monday.

Thanks, BarbBinder for your helpful inputs.

Could you please try restoring Photoshop preferences following the steps below:-

  • Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) as you start Photoshop. You will be prompted to delete the current settings. The new preferences files are created the next time you start Photoshop.

Note: Using this keyboard shortcut, preference files for custom shortcuts, workspaces, and color settings will also be reset to default.

Let us know if that helps

Sadly this did not fix it either. The windows still maximize with a single mouse click.

Let us know if that helps.

Akash, you are the man!!!

Changing ports didn't work but renaming the tw0001.dat to tw0001.dat.OLD did the trick.

Before you go off into the night to help other distressed photoshop users. Do you by any chance know  why this issue came up in the first place, because I had been using photoshop normally for a long time then one day this all started happening.

MANY THANKS!!!

Glad to know it is working now.

This issue started in Ps CC 2015 and is limited to only a few users. This file is linked with an extension that is required to run Photoshop. We will check if we can prevent creation of this .dat file in the future updates.

Thanks,

Akash

I wanted to let you know that I have had this same problem for over a year, and your solution worked for me--renaming tw0001.dat to tw0001.dat.OLD .  What a relief!
