Brush & Gradient filter issue

What the heck suddenly happened I wonder? After hours of no problems, I get a stacking issue (in another discussion) then this happens. Whether I use the gradual filter or the brush, the red highlight remains even when I move my cursor away from the point of change. You can see in the preview what it's supposed to look like on the main window, but the red highlight just stays there. Weird. Any ideas guys and gals?

Hit 'O', or uncheck Show Selected Mask Overlay.

When the overlay is constantly on, you will also see the checkmark in the box just above the film strip.
