Hi everyone, I am trying to create something like this

with the lines going in and out of the circles. I tried a few things but I can't get it to look as natural as in the reference above.. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to do this?

That looks like Trapcode 3D Stroke animated along a Mask path with the leading edge rounded and the trailing edge tapered off.

You could try to use AE's Stroke effect, but it involves animating both the Start and End parameters to create the animation and lacks the control over the appearance of the edges that Trapcode 3D Stroke provides.

This effect could also be accomplished fairly easily in Cinema4D Lite that's included with AE. Apply a "sperm" flat image as a texture to a plane, then animate that plane using align to spline.
