What version number of Lightroom do you have?

Nikon D5300 needs v5.3 or higher.

Cameras supported by Camera Raw

How do you connect cards to download?  Camera+usb cable,  Card reader?

What exact error message do you see?

What is the destination for the files from the card?

A "Not Reading" error message usually indicates that the DESTINATION for the files you are downloading does not have "Write" permissions, or is not available for some other reason.
