Video Projection Project

Hello,

I am a college student who is currently working on a project in which I will be video projection mapping. I am creating my own motion graphics to project onto several small geometric 3D shapes (around 8cms each in size), to make a music video for an original piece of electronic sound design.

I have enjoyed making motion graphics on After Effects before, specifically creating 80s style moving titles and sound reactive sound waves. I wanted to ask if you have any advice on graphics that may work well along with a modern electronic sound?

Sorry, but that's not much to go on.  Some clarifying questions:

Do you know the particulars about the kind of file you need to supply for the PLAYBACK device?  Find that out right away.  It will determine a lot about the way you will proceed.  Media container?  Codec?  Frame rate?  Horizontal/Vertical dimensions?

8 centimeters isn't very big for a 3D object illuminated by a video projector, which normally works with flat surfaces measured by feet on a side.  Will there be a wide shot with a bunch of them?  Tight shots of them seen one at a time?  What's their basic shape -- like cubes?  Potatoes?  Pancakes?  Balls?  Hair dryers?  Will they move?  How will they move?  How much detail do you anticipate will be seen -- and distorted -- on their surfaces?

It seems like every high school kid on the North American Continent has a youtube channel with an animated musical intro.  You could check 'em out.

I'm going to be using .mov files as I will be using HeavyM for my projection mapping, and I have tested these and know they'll work. The shapes have average face sides of 8 cm horizontally/ vertically, and with HeavyM this is large enough for me to pick out a number of sides for each shape (eg 3 for the cube). I'm using an NEC NP210 projector. These models are all stereotypical 3D shapes such as a cube, rectangular prism, triangular prism, hexagonal prism, triangular pyramid etc. I'm going to have 8 of these sat on and against a white background (which will also be projected on) in a wide shot. They won't move throughout. The idea is to have it small scale, as most projection mapping projects are large (on buildings, people etc). Another student is using sound design software to create a modern track with just electronic sounds, no instruments or vocals, and so I want my graphics to fit with this style.

Good -- you know your delivery specs.  Never heard of this projection software until I looked it up.  Hope you have the paid version, or learn to deal with the watermarked video it makes.  You're obviously aware that placement of the 3D objects on your set is crucial.

Go look at the high school kids' channel intros for some Ideas on using animated graphics with audio.  They do it all the time.
