i am looking to replicate this transition:

Screen Shot 2017-03-21 at 10.50.28.png

The transition swipes from left to right, and as you see there is what appears to be varying opacities to multiple layers.

Am i able to create this with a transition effect or is it simply a case of multiple layers, timed slightly differently, with differing opacities?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Cheers!

This is not an effect, it's a basic technique. Create a linear wipe with a feathered edge, quantize it with a Mosaic effect, use it as a matte on whatever footage you need. In case of a simple uniformly colored solid such as in teh example it can even be used directly.

Well, welcome to AE in particular and Motion Graphics / Special Effects /  Compositing in general.

This stuff takes time, effort and planning.  Not to mention knowledge & experience.
