new channels created from a selection are inverted

Hi all!

I've got some goofy setup thing that has apparently gone awry and I can't figure out what to uncheck to get it fixed.

In the latest version of photoshop, when I make a selection then click new channel in the channels palette, the resultant created channel is the inverse of what it is supposed to be.  For instance, if I make a simple circle marque selection, click the new channel icon, and inspect the new channel I get a channel with white OUTSIDE the selected area and black WITHIN the selected area.  This is backwards.

I'm also having similar odd behavior from multiplying selections.

Anyone know what's going on, what setting I need to change back to default?

Any help appreciated,

Joe

Hi Norman

If set the quick mask mode the way I showed in post 3, Select- Save Selection and the "save selection as channel" icon work the same way.

I have never seen that happen. Did you try resetting the tools or trashing preferences?

To reset tools, select any tool, then right+click the tool icon in in the Options bar and choose Reset all Tools.

Photoshop CCss_001.png

To reset preferences:

PS delete prefs.png

And in the meantime,

  1. after you make a selection, choose Select > Invert and then save the selection, or
  2. after you save a selection, click on the channel in the Channels panel and tap Ctrl/Cmd I to correct it.

Which version of PS are you using? Nowadays, when you option/alt click the new channel icon, you get the option to choose whether it's going to use "color  indicates selected area" or somesuch - and the setting you choose SHOULD NOT stick. However, in previous versions, I do seem to recall the choice made in that dialog box as sticking, in other words, remembering your previous choice.

Also, have you reset your preferences?

Hi

Double click on the quick mask icon in the tools panel

When the dialogue opens change selected areas to masked areas

Click - OK

Click on quick mask tool to turn off quick mask mode again.

Now that is exactly the solution to this! I've had the same issue for a while and was not sure what to do about it. Thank you!

7 years later, still fixed the issue. Was driving me nuts. Not even AI could tell me!

If you make a selection and then choose Select >  Save Selection, the new channel will show the selection as white on a black surround. (Save Selection)

If you make a selection and then, in the Channels panel, click on the Save Selection as a Channel, the result will be a black selection on a white surround.  (Alpha 1)

Dave,

You were right on ... I had needed quick mask to show selected areas for something I was doing.  Forgot all about that.  When then using channels a few days later, they were behaving differently with selections.

I had also reset tools ... but this particular selection was indeed the cause.

Thanks for the help.
