Vertical gutter division line in PDFs missing

I have recently noticed that the vertical divider line (denoting the gutter division) in PDF files that have been exported from InDesign as spreads, has disappeared altogether. Is this due to a view setting in Acrobat or an export setting in InDesign? I have never had this problem before today.

Are you sure you want to export as spreads? It sounds like you want to export as single pages and view in Acrobat as spreads. If that's the case, go to View>Page Display (in Acrobat) and choose Two-Up or Two-Up Continuous, and to get the vertical divider line, choose Show Gaps Between Pages. You will also want Show Cover Page During Two-Up so that page 1 isn't to the left of page 2.

Thanks for your reply. As long as the recipient of the pdf gets the same double-page view in Reader when they open it, I'm happy with this solution.

I just wondered if a setting had changed in a recent Adobe update that means I can't see this line anymore in a spreads export?

It's never been there when exporting as spreads. Spreads converts two or more facing pages into a single page.

You can also set the Acrobat and Reader display settings when exporting from InDesign, although this is not very common, in my experience. Also, if the final destination for your PDF is a commercial printer, they usually prefer single pages over spreads, as they are easier to impose. You can change the View setting (above Layout) if you use a custom PDF Preset.

Just be aware that those settings may not be honored in all PDF readers.
